   Breeds

There are over 20 different breeds of guinea pig. There are also many new, as yet not officially recognised breeds, such as the Boucle and Lunkarya.

Smooth coats

These guinea pigs have short, smooth hair. The hair is smooth and has no curls or waves and lies flat. It is no longer than 1.5 inches.

Abyssinian

Abyssinian guinea pigs have rosettes all over them. This causes the hair to stand up in certain places and to dip in others.

Teddy

A Teddy guinea pig has dense and kinked. The hair is short (less than an inch), frizzy and stands up. Their faces are usually flatter than the rex.

Rex

These pigs have short, frizzy hair which stands on end. The hair is less than an inch long and is quite dense. They have more rounded faces than the american teddy breed.

Sheltie

This breed has long hair, but which ends at the ground, rather than flowing out to the sides like the peruvian. The hair does not flow over the face.

Coronet

A coronet has long flowing hair, similar to the hair of a sheltie. However these guinea pigs have a crest on their head.

Texel

The texel has long flowing hair, which is usually very curly on the pig's back half. It's face, as with some of the other breeds (alpaca and other crosses), is short and frizzy like the hair of the Rex breed.

Alpaca

The alpaca/ boucle is a fairly new breed. They have very long hair, flowing over the face aswell. The hair is wavy and frizzy.

Himilayan

These guinea pigs are usually a creamy/off white colour all over, apart from their ears, feet and snout which are either chocolate brown or black. They are quite often red eyed aswell.

Dutch

This pattern is quite well known and recognisable, due to its popularity as a breed in rabbits. It is always white and another colour, these colours now include red, black, brown, beige and lilac. The dutch coat is recognised by the stripe of white down the nose/head and the band of white around the middle of the body.

Dalmation

This pattern is also well known, due to its famousness in dogs. Dalmation guinea pigs are white with patches of colour. There are black and brown types.

Agouti

The agouti is the natural colouring of the guinea pig. It involves two colours, a base colour and a top colour. The base colour is the colour which starts at the hair root and ends in the middle of each hair. The top colour is the colour which is found at the tips of the hairs. This gives an overall speckled affect.

Peruvian

This breed is a long haired type. It has a fringe over its face and hair flowing down over its body. The hair is about 12 inches long. These guinea pigs' coats need alot of attention and care.
